Yesterday’s early Los Altos election returns saw voters saying no to the controversial Measure C and rejecting the return of an incumbent mayor for a second term.
With 100 percent of precincts counted, Los Altos voters rejected Measure C by roughly 52 percent to 48 percent. The initiative would have required voter approval for changes made to city-owned properties, whether by rezoning, sale or lease. Discussion over Measure C highlighted the ongoing debate over land use and growth.
In the Los Altos City Council race, Los Altos Mayor Jean Mordo finished third in early returns, behind challengers Neysa Fligor – who finished first by a wide margain – and former planning commissioner Anita Enander. Enander brings a fiscally conservative and slow-growth approach.
Incumbents were voted in for second terms in the local school board races. In the Los Altos School District, Bryan Johnson and Vladimir Ivanovic finished first and second, respectively, with newcomer Vaishali Sirkay taking the third open seat. In the Mountain View Los Altos High School District, Fiona Walter and Debbie Torok retained their seats, while Catherine Vonnegut was elected to the third open seat.
South Los Altos voters helped elect three newcomers, Lori Cunningham, Jerry Liu and Satheesh Kumar Madhathil to the Cupertino Union School District. Cunningham was the first Los Altos resident to run for the board in 10 years. Fremont Union High School District passed Measure CC, a $275 million facilities bond. Incumbent Bill Wilson was re-elected, and newcomers Naomi Nakano-Matsumoto and Rosa Kim will join the Fremont Union High School District board.
