Walk-n-Roll for SMA goes virtual

Cure SMA’s 19th NorCal Walk-n-Roll for SMA, originally scheduled in person Saturday, has been changed to a virtual event.

A fundraiser for spinal muscular atrophy, this year’s Walk-n-Roll underwent the format adjustment “out of an abundance of caution and at the guidance of our Northern California event committee,” organizers said.

The Shively family of Los Altos is heavily involved in the cause, after losing their 3-year-old granddaughter Jessica to the disease in 2005. The Shivelys’ daughter Linda, Jessica’s mother, launched the event in 2003 to fund research to find a cure.

SV Open Studios hosts hybrid event

The artists of Silicon Valley Open Studios are resuming in-studio visits over two weekends – this Saturday and Sunday, and Sept. 25 and 26 – as well as offering online access.

The event, a Bay Area arts tradition for 35 years, enables art enthusiasts to view and buy local art either in person or from their homes.

Hundreds of SVOS artists – including those in Los Altos, Los Altos Hills and Mountain View – will open their studios 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. both weekends. The artists will display a variety of artwork, including paintings, fiber arts, mixed media, jewelry, sculptures and ceramics. Except for the photographs and prints, the art is one-of-a-kind.

CSA set to host day for homeless Sept. 25

Community Services Agency has scheduled its second “Treat Yourself” event Sept. 25, a daylong event designed to provide a sense of well-being and belonging for its homeless clients.

Inspired by the TV comedy series “Parks and Recreation,” “Treat Yourself” will include games, art activities and distribution of clothes and personal-care items.

CSA is seeking donations of new underwear, sports bras, socks and general clothing for men, women and children (ages 5-13), as well as travel sizes of shampoo, conditioner and body wash for hygiene kits to distribute at the event. Donors also may contribute gift cards to Target and Walmart.

Local residents interested in supporting the event through an online gift may call Kate Lincoln at 988-5073, ext. 150, or email [email protected].

The agency is also recruiting volunteers to help with setup, cleanup and running the games and activities for participants. To volunteer, call LaDrea Clark at 964-4630, ext. 114.
