The Bullis Charter School Board of Directors (BCS) unanimously voted April 22 in favor of a proposed 10-year agreement that would place the charter school exclusively at the Egan Junior High School campus at Portola Avenue and San Antonio Road in Los Altos.
The agreement essentially moves the Egan student body to a newly built 9.6-acre campus in the San Antonio neighborhood of Mountain View, north of El Camino Real.
In the agreement, yet to ratified by the Los Altos School District (LASD) Board of Trustees, the K-8 BCS would occupy 16 of the 18.8-acre Egan campus, with the remaining 2.8 acres set aside for teacher housing. The deal caps BCS enrollment at 1,111 students.
The transition would take place no sooner than 2023. The new Mountain View campus is projected to open during the 2023-24 school year at the earliest.
“Until the new Egan Junior High is constructed, Bullis Charter School would stay at its current locations at Egan Junior High and Black Intermediate, and would not expand to … any additional LASD campuses,” according to an April 3 statement by the school district.
“Over the past year, members of both BCS and LASD’s boards have worked together to identify a facilities solution that benefits our students, our schools, and our community,” according to a statement issued from the charter school board. “We’ve heard the repeated calls for a long-term agreement between BCS and LASD, and we believe that this proposed facilities agreement will provide 10 years of peace that our community wants and needs.
“The agreement reached represents an examination of all available options and a solution that best fits everyone’s needs. No agreement will be perfect, and compromises have been made on all sides. BCS voted for this agreement feeling confident that it was the best option, and we hope the LASD board agrees.”
The Los Altos School District Board of Trustees is scheduled to vote on the proposed agreement at their Monday (April 29) board meeting.
