There are few experiences more powerful than witnessing the ceremony that marks the final step in someone’s journey to becoming a U.S. citizen. On Nov. 20, Los Altos Chapter DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) members Melanie Ercoli, Donna Santistevan and Juno Szalay had the privilege of attending a naturalization ceremony in Campbell, where they watched a close friend, along with 400 other foreign nationals, take the Oath of Allegiance and officially join the ranks of U.S. citizens.
This moment wasn’t just a formality – it was the culmination of years of dedication, perseverance and sacrifice. For the new citizens, the ceremony represented the realization of their dreams, the embodiment of hard work and a deep commitment to the core values of freedom, democracy and opportunity that define the United States.
Why is the ceremony special?
The naturalization ceremony is a dignified event that brings together people from all over the world, each with their own story of struggle and triumph. As they stand together and recite the Oath of Allegiance, it’s a poignant reminder that U.S. citizenship is not just a legal status but a shared bond, forged through the values and ideals that unite us all.
At the ceremony in Campbell, the atmosphere was filled with a sense of pride and unity, as families and friends cheered on the new citizens.
The Oath of Allegiance, which marks the official moment of citizenship, was followed by the National Anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance – powerful acts that reinforce the sense of belonging and patriotism that the new citizens now share.
For those of us in attendance, the ceremony was an emotional and inspiring experience. It was a reminder of the strength of our nation, built on the dreams and hopes of people who come from all corners of the globe.
A new chapter for our chapter
With the return of group gatherings for naturalization ceremonies, we are excited to announce plans to organize field trips to upcoming events as a chapter. These ceremonies offer an incredible opportunity to connect with the broader community, witness the joy and pride of new citizens, and reflect on the significance of U.S. citizenship.
Look out for an invitation to attend future naturalization ceremonies – this is an event you will not soon forget. It is a powerful experience, one that reminds us all of the enduring promise of the American Dream.
