California Gov. Jerry Brown’s “State of the State” address Jan. 18 didn’t exactly have school district superintendents standing up and applauding. Local reaction to Brown’s budget proposals had officials grappling with the prospect of working with still less money than before.

The governor’s proposed 2012-2013 budget, if enacted, will reduce revenues to the MVLA High School District,” said Superintendent Barry Groves. “At this point, we are projecting a $1.34 million reduction as part of our ‘fair share’ from our general fund. In addition, we are also projecting an elimination of transportation funding of approximately $160,000.

However, the November election offers hope.

“If the proposed tax increase to be placed on the November ballot passes, the state revenue figures would improve,” Groves said. “In our current budget for 2011-2012, we are running a $700,000 structural deficit, which is projected to grow in future years. In coming weeks, we will be talking to the community and staff about the 2012-2013 budget and potential solutions.”
