The Los Altos High School PTSA awarded two “inspiring” teachers the Wholistic Teacher Award in June. The teachers were nominated by parents for being not only motivating in the classroom, but also concerned with students as people.
Ted Ferrucci, director of instrumental music, and Keren Robertson, chairperson of the English department, received top honors this year for their long hours dedicated to students outside the classroom, leading and assisting students in various facets and writing more than 30 letters of recommendation.
“Each of these teachers was singled out because they are demanding and exacting, but also inspire students to grow as individuals and make them feel they are making an important contribution to the whole,” said Dee Gibson, president of the Mountain View-Los Altos High School Foundation, in an e-mail.
Ferrucci is known to be at school as early as 6:30 a.m. several times a week, not finishing the day until 6:30 p.m., Gibson said. It is not uncommon for him to give up his Saturdays for his students.
“(Ferrucci’s) dedication is legendary,” Gibson said. “(He) inspires students to grow as individuals and also as part of a team.”
Robertson is known for giving assignments with care, making sure each student learns how to reflect upon their lives and experiences, Gibson said.
“All this is done to help students better understand themselves, learn from their mistakes and triumphs, and prepare for life ahead,” Gibson said.
Robertson is also known for being approachable and available to her students, often helping them with personal issues.
“Students have even remarked that they have observed other students in tears over a problem they may be having, whether with school or personal, and (Robertson) listens patiently and manages to calm the souls in a time of mounting stress,” Gibson said.
“Los Altos High School is truly fortunate to have these two teachers who consistently go the extra distance for their students,” she said.
