The California Department of Motor Vehicles is warning residents of a recent phone scam that involves callers attempting to steal personal information by pretending to be DMV employees offering to reschedule appointments.

The callers ask for Social Security numbers, birthdates, home addresses and driver license numbers. The DMV reminds customers to never give their personal information to anyone who contacts them by phone or email claiming to be a DMV employee.

“DMV employees do not call customers to ask for personal or confidential information, such as Social Security numbers, and anyone who receives such a call should know it is a scam to steal your identity,” DMV Director Jean Shiomoto said.

Victims may report scams by filing a complaint with the DMV Investigation Division’s fraud hotline at (866) 658-5758 or via email at [email protected], or mail a record of complaint form.

The DMV also recommends that individuals report such scams to the Federal Trade Commission at ftccomplaintassistant.gov.
