The first shipments went out last month for a winery born in Los Altos and realized in a Haight-Ashbury apartment.

Los Altos native Luc Bergevin started Foot of the Bed Cellars as a direct-to-consumer monthly subscription wine service fixed at $15 per bottle.

He and fellow Los Altos High School graduate Martin Sheehan-Stross deliver throughout the Bay Area, but they found many of their financial backers back home in the Los Altos area.

Do-it-yourself wine

and beer groups proliferate in the region, but Bergevin wanted to go pro, even while constrained by urban life. His first barrel of Zinfandel found a home at the foot of his bed, hence the business name that stuck.

These days, the partners seek out small lots of wine from local vineyards they deem a great value for money. Foot of the Bed buys by the barrel, bottles and labels the wines and distributes them directly to subscribers.
