A tough and determined Terra Nova proved too much for Los Altos on Homecoming night in a shutout 27-0 loss in the first league game of the season.

Terra Nova started brightly from the opening kickoff, surprising Los Altos with an onside kick recovery at midfield and driving 14 plays to score on its opening drive. Two quick three-and-outs for the Eagles in the first half led to scoring opportunities for the Tigers, culminating in a 20-0 lead at halftime. Terra Nova moved a league down this season from the PAL Ocean Division to the PAL El Camino and looked the part in taking down Los Altos, with Los Altos head coach Mark Adams noting Terra Nova was one of the hardest teams on its league schedule.

“I think we’ve got to keep practicing hard and get back to basic fundamentals,” Adams said after the game. “I think we just put ourselves in bad positions and that’s coaches and players.”

Los Altos was able to put together more expansive drives in the third and fourth quarters but still could not score. Los Altos entered the red zone in the second half but was unable to score points due to turnovers and failed conversions on third and fourth downs.

“We just couldn’t get ourselves going,” Adams said.

Terra Nova added another touchdown in the third quarter thanks to a 40-yard run from running back Austin Snead to make it 27-0.

Los Altos (0-5) will travel to play Santa Clara Thursday at 7 p.m. Terra Nova (3-2) hosts South San Francisco Friday at 7 p.m.
