A proposed park over housing? No thank you

A park replacing parking behind two of the most vibrant blocks of businesses in the entire downtown will have a deleterious impact, especially during the construction period.

There are many questions that seem to have either been overlooked, discounted or not addressed and need to be.

Did anyone ask the merchants how they felt about potentially having their rear service entrances blocked or cut off during the construction period?

Will these merchants’ delivery vehicles then clog traffic on Main Street during the construction period? If not, what is the plan so that the merchants do not suffer?

Where will the ADA parking spaces be relocated during this time? Removal, even temporarily during the construction, will make the ADA spaces farther away from the businesses and this is a very poor idea.

Can one of the “city officials” explain how they came to the conclusion that “the plan would attract more downtown visitors and stimulate more business?” A new park will not help fill all the empty storefronts that now exist.

The council needs a reality check.

Kudos to the Los Altos Police Dept.

Last week, my wife and I and another couple were walking on University Avenue when we saw a young boy, barefoot, walking towards Burke and looking a bit lost. The four of us spoke with him, found out that he had been playing in the creek at Shoup Park and become separated from his caretaker. We suggested he might want to come back to the park with us and we could help him look for her. He agreed, but, when we got to the park, no caretaker could be found, so we called the Los Altos police. Within minutes, an officer arrived and gently and kindly asked the boy some questions, obtained a description of his caretaker’s vehicle, radioed this information to other officers, one of whom soon found the caretaker driving around looking for the boy and had her follow him back to Shoup Park and, voila, boy and caretaker reunited!

Kind, careful, efficient police work – thank you, LAPD.
