The United States Congress is a dysfunctional mess, mainly because voters have elected highly partisan, do-nothing candidates who see their main objective as undermining the other party.

We can change that by electing people who are issue-based, seasoned and whose end-game is wanting to improve the lives of his constituents. People like Joe Simitian.

Simitian’s political career includes the state Senate and Assembly, and the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors. Some see a career politician. We see someone with experience and a track record of getting things done. He gets our endorsement to succeed Anna Eshoo in the 16th Congressional District.

With the state, he passed the hands-free cellphone bill that addressed distracted driving and likely saved thousands of lives. With the board of supervisors, he secured a signed agreement ending toxic mining and production at the Lehigh quarry and cement plant. He held a corrupt county sheriff accountable, ushering her resignation.

Over the course of his career, Simitian has always made himself accessible. Although representing nine of the county’s 15 cities as District 5 supervisor, he has been ever-present in Los Altos, listening to people and responding with legislation. He offers strong leadership to “break through the noise,” as he puts it. Simitian is the function to combat dysfunction. He’s the best choice for voters in the March 5 election. Vote Simitian for Congress.

The top two candidates gaining the most votes in the primary will qualify for the Nov. 7 general election. Here are two other candidates who impressed us:

• Julie Lythcott-Haims: The author/activist and Palo Alto City Council member is well-spoken and inspiring in her quest to work hard for working people. She will be a strong voice for reproductive rights as well as combating climate change. As the only woman running for the seat, Lythcott-Haims will offer needed female representation at a time when it is sorely needed.

• Sam Liccardo: The Harvard-educated former San Jose mayor has well researched and specific plans for addressing his two top-tier issues, the cost of living and homelessness. His knowledge of the issues and his drive are impressive.
