The San Mateo, Silicon Valley North and Silicon Valley South chapters of Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL) are hosting two virtual panels with 10 candidates running for U.S. Rep. Anna Eshoo’s District 16 congressional seat 7-8:30 p.m. Feb. 1 and Feb. 5.
Eshoo, who filled the seat for over 30 years, announced in November she would not be seeking re-election. Her term expires this year.
Questions posed pertain to climate and environment solutions. Democratic candidates Joby Bernstein, Evan Low, Joe Simitian and Julie Lythcott-Haims, and independent candidate Greg Lin Tanaka are scheduled to participate in the Feb. 1 event. Democrats Peter Dixon, Rishi Kumar, Sam Liccardo, Ahmed Mostafa and Republican Peter Ohtaki are scheduled to participate Feb. 5.
The panels will be conducted similar to two previous candidate panels that CCL sponsored in April 2022 for U.S. Congressional District 15 and in January 2020 for State Senate District 13, attended by 20 sponsors and 350 voters, respectively.
“Each candidate will be given the questions ahead of time. In order to remain true to our nonpartisan approach, we do not endorse candidates,” CCL members said in a press release.
Citizens’ Climate Lobby is a grassroots, nonpartisan organization that lobbies Congress to pass legislation to address climate change. It has approximately 200,000 volunteers and supporters with a chapter in every congressional district and members around the world. More than 3,000 CCL members are in San Mateo/Santa Clara county chapters.
“We believe that climate solutions and the environment are critical issues that Congress must address right now, and these issues are among the highest priorities for voters in District 16,” the press release said.
Co-sponsors for the event include environmental groups 350 Silicon Valley, Acterra, Sustainable San Mateo County and Sustainable Silicon Valley.
