NOTICE OF PROPOSED RATE CHANGE BEFORE THE CALIFORNIA PUBLIC UTILITIES COMMISSION (CPUC)
Beginning in July, your water bill will reflect a significant increase in the price of wholesale water and ground water replenishment charges from the Santa Clara Valley Water District (SCVWD), which is the main sources of water for the Los Altos. The SCVWD has adopted a 524.4 million budget including Capital Expenditure and operational expenses for fiscal year 2016-2017to improve capital infrastructure and protection of its groundwater basins. California Water Service Company (Cal Water) filed Advice Letter 2224 on June 29, 2016 requesting approval from the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to increase revenue in the amount of $ 3,067,221, or 10.5%, in its Los Altos District. This increase would be a direct pass-through of the higher water prices imposed by the SCVWD. Cal Water has designed its rates so that 100% of the price increase would be reflected in the quantity rates that Cal Water charges customers. The monthly service charges would remain the same.
The CPUC has determined that expenses for purchased water are not under Cal Water’s control, and that a pass-through is just and reasonable if properly calculated. If the Commission approves Cal Water?s request, atypical residential customer with a 5/8″ x 3/4″ meter who uses 19 CCF (which is 1,900 cubic feet or 14,212 gallons) of water per month would receive a monthly water bill of $103.59. This would be an increase of $10.88 or 11.74% over a $92.71 bill at current rates.
