Parents packed the auditorium at Los Altos High School on Wednesday, Sept. 17, for an MVLA Parent Education Speaker Series event. The guest speaker, New York Times bestselling author Jeffrey Selingo, discussed how families can help their children find the right college fit.
Selingo, the author of three books about university admissions, encouraged families to broaden their perspective when considering higher education.
“I want to help our students succeed by looking beyond the top 25 schools,” he said. “Many families have to have a plan B.”
He also advised students and parents to visit campuses and engage with current students to get a sense of what college life is like. “Walk around the campus and ask students what it is like (to be there),” Selingo recommended, emphasizing the importance of finding a school that aligns with each student’s desired experience.
As a parting gift, families left not only with new perspectives on the college search but also with a free copy of Selingo’s “Dream School: Finding the College That is Right for You” book.
