The Mountain View Los Altos High School District recently expanded access to the Middle College program, housed on the Foothill College campus, and now offers college access and opportunities to two cohorts of 50 students for a total of 100 juniors and seniors.
“Middle college high school programs offer several benefits to students,” said Nellie Meyer, MVLA superintendent. “These programs are designed to bridge the gap between high school and college, providing a unique educational experience.”
According to Annett Trail, Middle College program specialist, students take both high school and college classes to complete their high school graduation requirements.
“They also receive individualized counseling and support from their Middle College teachers and have access to all student services provided by Foothill, including college counseling, access to the library, tutoring centers and the technology center,” she said.
Students earn Foothill College credit for their college coursework, which may be transferred to other colleges or lead to advanced placement. Parents and former students see the program as an opportunity for academic growth and personalized learning.
MVLA officials said the Middle College has shown a range of positive outcomes and benefits for students, including earning college credits early, reduced college costs, a supportive learning environment and a smoother transition to college life.
Parents interested in learning more about Middle College can attend the “Benefits of Middle College” information night scheduled 6:30 p.m. Dec. 13 via Zoom. Notifications will also be shared through high school newsletters.
Additional information sessions for students will be scheduled in January at Mountain View and Los Altos high schools.
Applications for the program are due in late February. Acceptance letters will be sent out in March.
