Gallery 9 on Main Street will display Los Altos Art Docents’ student art, selected from a series of spring art shows, from May 31 to June 29.
By presenting this exhibit of young artists to the community, Gallery 9 is supporting the future of local art education and is giving the students an opportunity to show their work in a gallery.
Along with the children’s art, the artist members of Gallery 9 will have their art on display as well, including the featured artist for June, painter Jan Meyer, and her art show “Symphony of Color & Joy.”
The student show opening reception is scheduled 2-4 p.m. Saturday, May 31.
Los Altos Art Docents have a rich history in Los Altos schools, and have provided trained docent-led classroom lessons since its founding in the spring of 1970 by Nancy Marston and Marlene Grove. Students are exposed to a variety of examples and reproductions of famous artwork as inspiration, and lessons in each medium build upon each other as students progress through elementary school. In a typical school year, the Los Altos Art Docents average 700 classroom visits, delivering over 50 unique lessons to all TK-6th grade students across the district.
Gallery 9 of Los Altos serves as the oldest art gallery in Los Altos. It was originally established in 1970 in Menlo Park by a cooperative group of nine artists – hence its name. Gallery 9 moved to Los Altos in 1973 and some of the earliest members are still with the gallery. Current membership stands about 30 and consists of a diverse group of talented local artists who work in various media, including painting, printmaking, drawing, photography, jewelry, ceramics and sculpture.
