The Los Altos Library Endowment presents its 22nd annual Speaking Volumes program featuring award-winning author Alka Joshi. The talk is scheduled 7-9 p.m. April 1 in the Los Altos Community Center’s Grand Oak Room. Admission is free.
In the event, titled “Ten Years to Overnight Success,” Joshi will discuss her path to becoming a writer at age 62, her success with her debut novel, “The Henna Artist,” and why she feels moved to write about India.
“The Henna Artist” is the first book in her Jaipur Trilogy. It was followed by “The Secret Keeper of Jaipur” and “The Perfumist of Paris.” Her fourth novel, “Six Days in Bombay,” will be out April 15, and will be followed by a fifth in 2026.
“The Henna Artist” rocketed to success when it was selected as a Reese Witherspoon Bookclub pick. It immediately became a New York Times Bestseller, an L.A. Times Bestseller and an Amazon and Goodreads favorite and was longlisted for the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize. The book has been translated into 29 languages. Within the first two years of publication, it was picked up by Netflix for development as an episodic series starring actress Freida Pinto.
The event is sponsored by the Los Altos Library Endowment, in cooperation with the city of Los Altos.
