Los Altos History Museum invites high school students to apply for its teen docent program for the 2025-2026 academic year. Now in its seventh year, the program offers a unique opportunity for young people to learn about local history, engage with the public and lead tours as a museum ambassador.

The program is limited to 20 participants. Applications must be submitted through the museum’s website by April 11, 2025.

Participants will benefit from a comprehensive training experience that not only develops teamwork, public speaking and leadership skills, but also provides valuable volunteer hours and practical insights into museum operations. Beyond their docent responsibilities, teens may have opportunities to serve on the board as youth representatives and assist with special events like the Apricot STEM Fair.

Sophie Filer, current youth representative on the museum’s board of directors shared, “The teen docent program gave me a sense of belonging when I moved to Los Altos just before high school. Through it, I’ve gained invaluable professional development and experience in museum work and history while building lasting relationships across the community that I will forever treasure. I love how the museum and the teen docent program foster intergenerational connections through a shared passion for history.”

The commitment for the program includes attending a one-week training session in June, followed by a monthly commitment of four hours as a docent throughout the school year. Meetups also allow volunteers to connect with their peers and build lasting relationships.
