Good vehicle maintenance and the right kind of fuel can save gasoline expenses. AAA of Northern California offers these tips:

Most of today’s cars are designed to operate on regular unleaded fuel. If your owner’s manual does not call for premium fuel, using anything other than regular is a waste of money.

Don’t top off your gas tank. Fuel expansion can cause an overflow.

Make sure a replacement gas cap is the correct one for your car.

If miles driven per tank are less than what you are used to, your vehicle should be inspected.

Be sure that spark plugs are in good condition.

Check the air filter twice a year, or more often in dusty conditions.

Inflate tires according to the recommendation in the owner’s manual or as shown on a label attached to the driver’s door pillar. Underinflated tires are a safety hazard and can cut fuel economy.
