The “Donut Derelicts,” a loosely organized group of local automotive enthusiasts have celebrated their first anniversary. The “gearheads” gather every Saturday morning at Main Street Cafe & Books to swap tips, commiserate and share experiences with and memories of great cars.
The unusual and collectible cars begin streaming into the parking plaza on State Street around 8:30 a.m. By midmorning, there are from 10 to 20 cars in the lot, all worthy of more than a second glance. The group gathers around a long table in the cafe’s Chat Room.
Even on a dreary Saturday morning right before Christmas, downtown visitors could examine two air-cooled Franklins, a Pierce-Arrow limousine and a mid-engined Ferrari, as well as several Jaguars, MGs, Morgans and Triumphs from the 1950s and 1960s.
If you are interested in cars, you are welcome to join the Donut Derelicts. Any slightly out-of-the-ordinary car will draw an interested bevy of tire-kickers any Saturday in the parking lot.
There are no dues, no rules, no agenda and no officers, just an informal smattering of folks who enjoy sharing their passion for interesting automobiles.
If you are downtown, feel free to stop by and see the rotating collection of cars.
Main Street Cafe & Books is located at 134 Main St., Los Altos.
