The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook indicating that heavy rains and wind will return to the Los Altos area beginning Wednesday night, Dec. 10. High winds and flash flood watches have been issued for all Bay Area Counties for Thursday, Dec. 11.

The city of Los Altos provides a complimentary sandbag station to help residents protect property from flooding during the rainy season. Residents can get bags at the city’s Municipal Services Center, located in the McKenzie Park parking lot, 707 Fremont Ave. In Los Altos Hills, sandbags are available at the town’s Corporation Yard located at 27400 Purissima Road, Los Altos Hills.

City officials recommend residents get battery-operated flashlights and a radio with fresh batteries ready. Listen for updates on storm conditions and power outages.

If you have a home telephone that requires electricity to work (such as a cordless phone or answering machine), plan for alternate communication. Have a standard plug-in-the-wall telephone handset or cellular telephone ready as a back-up.

Freeze plastic containers filled with water to make blocks of ice that can be placed in your refrigerator/freezer during an outage to prevent foods from spoiling.

When you are out and about driving in the rain, allow for extra travel time and use caution.
