The city of Los Altos is sponsoring a tree adoption program, inviting residents to decorate a Christmas tree in time for the holiday season.

In collaboration with the Los Altos Village Association and the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce, the city acquired trees at a discount from the Kiwanis Club. Businesses, community organizations and families can apply to adopt a tree and participate in decorating. Fifty trees will be available for adoption.

Dubbed the inaugural Trim A Tree @ Los Altos project, city representatives hope the initiative brings the community together and adds a festive touch of uniquely decorated trees to the business districts.

The deadline to apply to adopt a tree is Monday, and participants can decorate their trees with their own trimmings between Dec. 1 and Dec. 6 after installation Nov. 30. The trees will stay up through Dec. 28.

Participants will be chosen on a first-come, first-serve basis.

In instructions for participants, city officials urged them to “get creative and have fun with decorations,” using ornaments that are wind- and water-resistant.

Last month, the city sponsored a storefront Hallow-Window painting event for families that showcased local residents’ creativity, which the Trim A Tree opportunity aims to build on.

“We have no doubt the Los Altos community will go above and beyond with decorating,” city officials said in a statement. “Looking through the Hallow-Window paintings, each family was so creative and unique with their design. We think it’s just what we need to get the business districts ready for the holidays.”
