The 63rd annual Los Altos Kiwanis Club Pet Parade is scheduled 10 a.m. Saturday in downtown Los Altos. A Town Crier-sponsored contest follows in the Community Plaza at State and Main streets.

A parade of dogs, cats, turtles, horses, guinea pigs and other assorted pets, not to mention humans, will march up and down Main and State streets, accompanied by dignitaries riding in vintage cars and spectators staking their spots.

Vintage cars from several sources, collected for parade use by local car enthusiast Bob Mabe, will transport the dignitaries along the parade route. Serving as parade grand marshals are retiring Los Altos School District Superintendent Tim Justus and his wife, Kim. Attendees will include Los Altos Mayor David Casas, Los Altos Hills Mayor Breene Kerr, Los Altos Hills City Councilman Dean Warshawsky, Los Altos Police Chief Tuck Younis, Los Altos Chamber of Commerce Chairman Dan Brunello, Los Altos School District Board of Trustees President Margot Harrigan and Mountain View Los Altos Union High School District trustees Susan Sweeley and Judy Hannemann.

Kiwanis Club officials scheduled to attend include Los Altos Kiwanis President Donna Cedervall and Division 34 Lt. Gov. Mike Akana.

Town Crier staff will collect names of parade participants at the start of the event to recognize marchers’ involvement in the parade. Those who plan to participate can notify us early by e-mailing their names, names of pet(s) and titles of entries, if they have one. E-mail Editor Bruce Barton at [email protected].

The paper will conduct two pet parade contests this year: First, the traditional parade contest, where judges select the most outstanding entrants and award prizes to the winners. Second, the Town Crier has announced a pet parade photo contest immediately following the parade, open to photos taken at the parade.

Entrants can submit no more than two digital photos to [email protected] by May 19. The best selections will be printed in the May 26 edition, and the winner will receive a $50 prize.
