Mountain View Los Altos Union High School District trustees are scheduled to take formal action on mitigating the projected $2 million to $3 million budget deficit at their Monday meeting.

After cutting $1.2 million from the 2009-2010 budget, district officials have continued to coordinate with the Budget Advisory Committee on recommendations to scale back the 2010-2011 budget even further. Though some revenue for next school year will come from one-time federal or categorical dollars, Superintendent Barry Groves suggested that trustees trim the budget an additional $1.6 million.

At an April 6 study session, the board reviewed a list of 42 areas for potential cuts, prioritized by the budget advisory committee. By letter, Groves recommended implementing the top 25 items, with some minor tweaks. Revisions would include reducing staff development, freshmen transitioning, the Wellness Program, the GATE program, theater manager hours, the library program and staff, and Partners for New Generations services, and eliminating exit exam classes.

Assistant Superintendent Steve Hope, in charge of human resources and technology, said the district does not anticipate any cuts in certificated staff, including teachers, but reductions could include classified personnel, such as office support staff.
