Tatiana Boulankine doesn’t mind when dogs come into her store and sniff the food.

“Most of the dogs in Los Altos have good manners,” she said with a smile.

Boulankine and her husband, Denis, own Pet’s Delight, a downtown Los Altos retailer that specializes in uncommon animal foods and products. The couple bought the pet store in August after coming to the Bay Area from Russia. They immediately noticed a demand for atypical pet goods.

“Our customers like to treat their pets like royalty,” Boulankine said.

Besides such standard supplies as food, medicine and pooper-scoopers, Pet’s Delight stocks dog clothing and costumes (including tuxedos and smoking jackets), pet massagers, sunscreen, sanitary pads for dogs in heat, Pampers for older dogs and lifejackets.

“Every week we get in something new,” Boulankine said.

Picky dogs can find such treats as “PupPuccino,” “Liver Biscotti,” venison from New Zealand, vegetarian dinners and Atkins low-carb food. Finicky cats can look forward to eating beaver, duck and oatmeal, kosher chicken or free-range pheasant. Boulankine said the food is of such high quality that humans can eat it, though it may need a little something extra to be tasty.

The only pet luxuries not available at Pet’s Delight are the pets themselves.

“We really believe that if you need an animal, you can go to a shelter or a breeder if you want pedigree,” Boulankine said. She encourages adoptions from the Humane Society Silicon Valley.

To celebrate their first anniversary, the Boulankines have scheduled a store sale Aug. 20-26. The weeklong celebration will feature special giveaways and vendor presentations including free samples and information.

Pet’s Delight is located at 390 State St It is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
