CSA holding ‘Empty Bowls’ benefit

The Community Services Agency (CSA) of Mountain View and Los Altos has scheduled its 2005 Empty Bowls Soup Supper fund-raiser 4-6 p.m., April 17, at the Central Seventh Day Adventist Church in Mountain View.

CSA’s Alpha Omega Steering Committee Chairwoman Bonnie Nunke said this unique event benefits Alpha Omega’s rotating shelter program that provides short-term shelter to homeless clients actively seeking employment.

The community’s potters, restaurants and churches combine to make this a successful and meaningful event. The Orchard Valley Ceramic Art Guild will provide beautiful, one-of-a-kind pots for guests to purchase and take home as a reminder that not everyone’s bowls are always full. Local restaurants donate the soup, along with salad and rolls, to fill these bowls for a delicious dinner. To reach this year’s goal of $10,000, a silent auction has been added to the dinner event.

Local churches, including Los Altos United Methodist and St. Nicholas, will sell the bowls for $10 the two weekends prior to the event to enable anyone not able to attend to contribute.

Individual tickets are $15 and include dinner and a keepsake bowl.

Artist ‘Stars’ exhibited at cafe

Sixteen artists have been selected by five jurors for a Society of Local Artists (SOLA) “Stars” exhibit, running through Monday at Main Street Cafe and Books in Los Altos.

SOLA Stars, a juried element of SOLA, offers participating artists an opportunity to advance their careers by having their art reviewed by leading Bay Area museum curators and directors.

Five jurors selected 16 artists from among 65 entering this year’s SOLA Stars program. These artists are among 456 members of Silicon Valley Visual Arts, producers of the annual Open Studios events.

Among the winning artists are Stanford artist Sukey Bryan, Palo Alto artist Julia Nelson-Gal, Mountain View artist Luara Deem and Los Altos artist Marjorie Law.

The 16 Stars winners represent all mediums from black-and-white and color photography to oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings, monotype prints, carved cardboard, mixed media paintings and sculpture.

Silicon Valley Visual Arts is dedicated to developing visual arts in the Bay Area. The group lends support to non-professional artists by providing a variety of programs that connect artists with social causes throughout the region.

The group’s next Open Studios program, now in its 19th year, is scheduled for the first three weekends in May. For more information, log on to www.svopenstudios.org.

Main Street Cafe & Books is located at 134 Main St.
