Los Altos Hills resident and high-tech heavyweight Bill Krause will be among five Silicon Valley leaders honored March 30 at Junior Achievement’s 18th annual Business Hall of Fame ceremony.

Krause, a co-founder of 3Com among other ventures, will be honored along with: Intel CEO Craig Barrett; Irwin Federman, partner at U.S. Venture Partners; Dan and Charmaine Warmenhoven, Network Appliance CEO and associate director at the San Jose Diosese’s Special Ministries, respectively; and county schools superintendent Colleen Wilcox.

The event, set to begin 6 p.m. at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, will feature examples of current Junior Achievement students of Silicon Valley and the Monterey Bay areas showing how they have benefited from the organization’s programs.

Krause, currently CEO of Caspian Networks, is former President and CEO of Exodus Communications, Storm Technology and 3Com Corporation. Krause, with his wife, Gay, founded Krause Center for Innovation at Foothill College to create systematic change in education and youth development.

Krause, 61, is being honored for his lifelong commitment to education, fostered when he attended The Citadel military college of South Carolina. He has backed progress in education on numerous fronts.

“When I was active at 3Com, I was one of the first CEOs to participate in a program called “Principal for a day,” and encourage my colleagues to get involved as well,” Krause said. “Also I was a founding member of the Joint Venture Silicon Valley Education Initiative and was very active in that program. “

Krause has been particularly generous to his alma mater, The Citadel. Currently on the Citadel Foundation board, Krause and his foundation have funded a number of programs, including a business plan competition scholarship, a staff/faculty incentive compensation program and, most recently, a $2 million grant to support the Krause Initiative in Ethics and Leadership.

“The focus of our Krause Foundation is on education in general,” Krause said. “However and perhaps most important, Gay’s involvement in and commitment to education has had a significant impact on me. “

As a result, the Krause Foundation played a major role in establishing the Krause Center for Innovation at Foothill, which brings teachers up to speed on new technology, so that classrooms and students can in turn, benefit by it.
