Two soon-to-be seniors from local high schools will perform in The American Conservatory Theater’s production of “When They Speak of Rita,” which opens this weekend in San Francisco.
Justin Okin from Los Altos High and Adam Gerston from St. Francis High are among five young Bay Area actors featured in the play. Okin, age 17, lives in Los Altos, while Gerston, also 17, is a resident of Los Gatos.
“Rita” premieres at 7 p.m. Friday at Hastings Studio Theater, 30 Grant Ave. The play will be presented at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.
Written by Daisy Foote, “Rita” is commissioned by the ACT Young Conservatory’s New Plays Program. It is being directed by ACT’s Craig Slaight.
“Rita” is described as a contemporary drama set in a small New England town. Dealing with issues of family, career, identity and sexuality, the play focuses on Rita Potter, a restless wife and mother. Rita is frustrated by her thwarted career ambitions, her marriage and her 18-year-old son, Warren (played by Okin). Worried Warren will follow in her footsteps by marrying young and skipping college, she seeks comfort in the arms of Warren’s best friend, Jimmy (Gerston).
Tickets to the shows are free, but seating is limited and reservations are required.
