Letters to the Editor: Don’t be misled, council members say

A group called the Los Altos Hills Civic Association with a Los Altos address but no phone number recently sent a mailer to some residents in the Hills about outdoor lighting policy.

The notice warned the reader that the Council “is about to vote on a mulch more restrictive outdoor lighting policy …” This was inaccurate, and the people who responded were misled.

Since 1985 the Town ordinance has stated, “Outdoor lighting should use the minimum number and wattage lights which will safely illuminate the area. Outdoor light sources shall be shielded so as not to be directly visible from off site. Lighting of tennis courts is prohibited.” The Town Newsletter in October 1996 had an article from our planner describing the ordinance and guidelines in interpreting it.

Putting these guidelines in writing assists developers in understanding the intent and purposes of our regulations. That is what the Council is attempting to do. It is not expanding its regulation of lighting.

The Council understands that lighting is often a matter of safety. It is trying to balance the residents’ freedom to light their property with the right of privacy of the neighbors from intrusive lights.

The Town welcomes community input at Council meetings. Accurate agenda information is available on the net at www.losaltosonline/lah, in the main library and on the Town notice boards.

Enjoyed ‘National Nothing Day’ column

Just a short note to let you know how much I enjoyed the “National Nothing Day” column by Joan Passarelli in your July 16 paper.

It was delightful and insightful. The only thing she “forgot” was to also close down the radio and television stations and entertainment centers (movies, theme parks, etc.).
