The new Mountain View Public Library is scheduled to open Oct. 25, some two months ahead of schedule.

Mountain View City Manager Kevin C. Duggan cites good planning, good weather and a good working relationship with construction contractors as reason for the projected early opening. The new, 60,000 square foot library, to be located at 585 Franklin St., will be twice the size of the old library building and will combine traditional library resources with the latest in information and communication technology. More than 300,000 volumes will be housed at the new facility. Construction costs for the new library will be approximately $14 million, Duggan said.

To prepare for the move to the new library, the temporary facility located at the corner of Moffett Boulevard and Middlefield Road will close its doors at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 28.

Most Library services will be suspended for a four-week period and borrowers will be allowed to keep the materials they have checked out from the library until the new building is open.

Special bookmobile service and book return boxes will be available during the closure. Additional information regarding library services available during the move can be obtained at the library prior to Sept. 28.

A grand opening celebration for the new library is scheduled for Oct. 25.

The new library building was designed by the architectural firm of Esherick Homsey Dodge and Davis of San Francisco. Turner Construction Company is serving as the construction manager for the project.
